W06 Blog: Attributional Tendencies

Attributional tendencies refer to what do we attribute success, to what do we attribute our personal failures, to what do we attribute the successes of others, to what do we attribute the failures of others. In our culture, in all cultures, we’re always attributing things to other things, like other causes.” -Professor Jhon Ivers I understand is that internal attributes are when we think ourselves responsible for something, and when we are external attribute is when we think is other’s fault. Our students will have different types of attributes, we need to recognize what they have to help them in their learning because if they always is thinking that is her/his fault their affective filter will be high. As teachers , we need to know our students, be emphatic and tolerant with their point of views and be respectful of what they think, but let them know that we do not think the same way as they and they need to be tolerant and respectful.

W06 Blog: Personal Space Differences

During these pandemic times we have learn to have a more space in our bubble. 2 meters is our personal space in these pandemic times.   Im from Mexico, and we are warm and happy people, when we greet each other, we hug and kis each other. Our body is our form to show love and emotions.   When I travel to England, I started to huge people ha when I say Hello to them, here in Mexico it is common to hug or kiss when you are introducing yourself, or sometimes just with hands. It was funny to see their faces when I did it. I have a friend from France and with people always kiss 2 times no matter who you are, they don’t care about personal space. Here in Mexico sometimes we don’t care about personal space. In a ESL classroom we face some challenges that we could have is when they give their point of view, their classmates have different opinions and they fight because of it. But as we have our bubble of space we need to create one called bubble of respect.

W06 Blog: Individualism vs. Collectivism

The awards to a single individual such as being named the student of the month or the honor roll (in Mexico) (is when three students are selected from each grade and are awarded throughout the month for their grades or behavior. These practices can have the opposite effect of the intended positive praise and significantly widen the communication gap. Collectivism, in contrast to individualism, places the welfare of the many above the needs of one. And it is practiced in many countries of the world. Since collectivism encourages students to be highly focused and active in class. As teacher could not be expected to apply the multitudes of diverse teaching styles, it can be beneficial to know how a student would view a typical classroom in order to provide the most optimal learning environment.   The choice of taking the time to know our student’s background, we can help lower affective filters to help them to feel included, without disregarding their beliefs.
