W06 Blog: Individualism vs. Collectivism
The awards to a single individual such as being named the student of the month or the honor roll (in Mexico) (is when three students are selected from each grade and are awarded throughout the month for their grades or behavior. These practices can have the opposite effect of the intended positive praise and significantly widen the communication gap.
Collectivism, in contrast to individualism, places the welfare of the many above the needs of one. And it is practiced in many countries of the world. Since collectivism encourages students to be highly focused and active in class.
As teacher could not be expected to apply the multitudes of diverse teaching styles, it can be beneficial to know how a student would view a typical classroom in order to provide the most optimal learning environment. The choice of taking the time to know our student’s background, we can help lower affective filters to help them to feel included, without disregarding their beliefs.
