Culture Paradigms 05/17/2022

Im from Mexico, from Oaxaca a south state, and I serve my mission in Chihuahua the biggest state in Mexico. Chihuahua is a north state, shared boundaries with the US. When I was there, I noticed that several people there were hating the south part of Mexico. Some make fun of me because of my skin color and my height (even thou I’m taller that the average in Oaxaca) (1.67cm). However, none of these cultural paradigms defined me. None.

As a missionary I couldn’t answer those critics as I wanted, because I was representing someone better than me and all those people (Christ) I don’t know why even my Mexican fellows were that kind of racist. I thought I don’t want to know how American are with other people different than them. Everyone is different, because God loves variety. Here in Mexico, we have one of the most beautiful cultures, food places, people and landscapes.

The ESL classroom will be a melting pot. As a teacher, I celebrate uniqueness, and I love to have students with different cultures and traditions, because I can be a student of their culture and traditions too, I want to create a safe space for learning, where students are willing to learn more than a language skill, but also respect others point of view and believes. Because criticism based in looks, and believes is bad for the society. I want to teach my student to be respectful to everyone, everywhere.

  1. Hello Diana, I share your idea of creat a safety place for students to be as they are and to share their culture to others, that is a good way to enrich each other.

  2. Totally agree, we all need to have a safe place like in this case students need to be accepted, respectful so as a future teacher this is our responsibility. I also don´t understand why people have to discriminate others because of their skin color, or weight, etc. because as you said we are children of God and he love us the way we are.
